The Nigeria Police Force and Ethnic Militia
(National Institute Kuru, 2001-11-30) Labaran, Bello W.
The aim of this study is to analyze Police performance and its effectiveness in relations to crime control. The emergence and activities of ethnic militia is a cog to security situation in Nigeria. Accordingly the relationship between the Police and Ethnic Militia and how such has affected the general security situation in the country was assessed. The analysis of the study, which consists of Police functions and constraints that militate against their performance, are highlighted. The image such ineffectiveness has created for the Force and the constant face-offs between the Police and ethnic militant groups are also analysed in the context of alternative options for policing the country more effectively. From the study analysis, it was found that the upsurge of ethnic militant activities in the Country has political and economic undertones. Furthermore, the constraints facing the Police can be resolved politically through executive decisions and budgetary allocations. All these are expected to enable the Force efforts to be complemented by incorporating schemes such as the Supernumerary and Special Constable Police. This is, in addition to bringing the various vigilante groups under the control of the police. The recommendations were aimed at imbibing the concept of neighborhood policing in the country.
